Here are some of the highlights of recent progress by our coalition, Environment America.
Repowering America with wind & solar
Across our nation, workers are erecting wind turbines and installing solar equipment that will supply clean electricity to millions of homes, schools and offices. Our staff and members have helped win new laws in 28 states to help renewable energy grow. Now we’re urging President Obama and Congress to repower America by expanding clean energy nationwide.
Building the clean cars of the future
Imagine if cars that get better than 40 miles per gallon were the norm. By 2020, the new cars and trucks being sold in New York will meet these standards and emit 40 percent less carbon pollution, thanks to new policies won with our help and favored by President Obama.
Protecting the Great Lakes
Despite their vast size, the Great Lakes are vulnerable to pollution, development and other threats. New Environment New York-backed laws to curb sewage dumping, restrain big polluters such as BP, and conserve the region’s water resources will help protect and sustain our Great Lakes.
Finding solutions to global warming
As President Obama races to solve the climate crisis, he can look for ideas and inspiration to the Northeast states where we’ve shaped plans to cap and reduce the carbon footprint of power plants and other polluters.
Protecting our national parks
There are places like the Grand Canyon that must be protected from harm. We are leading the fight to prevent dangerous mining at 800 new claims that could pollute the Grand Canyon, and to stop mining claims that could be harmful to any national park.
Fighting toxic pollution
Our research indicates that chemicals linked to birth defects, cancer and asthma are found in the bodies of nearly every American. We’ve won action in Congress to counter Bush administration rollbacks of our most important toxic safety laws.
Preserving the Arctic Refuge
Some 123,000 Porcupine caribou will migrate to their calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this spring, thanks in part to our steadfast opposition to oil company attempts to open this pristine wilderness to oil drilling.
Bringing change to Washington
In 2008, voters elected the most pro-environment president and Congress in recent memory, marking a long overdue change in the nation’s course on energy and the environment. We did our part by talking to thousands of voters in battleground states in order to elect Barack Obama and 29 pro-environment congressional candidates.
Standing up for wild forests
Our staff and members helped win protections for nearly 60 million acres of pristine national forests. When President Bush rewrote these rules, we mobilized millions of Americans to counter attempts to log or drill for gas and oil in forests from Alaska to Maine.
Restoring our oceans to health
Marine mammals like whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, fish and other wildlife stand a better chance of survival thanks to our efforts to prevent oil and gas drilling in sensitive coastal waters and prohibit cruise ship dumping. In the Atlantic, off Long Island, summer flounder, scup, porgy and increasingly threatened sharks will be protected from the ravages of overfishing.
