After New York suffered more than $1 billion in damage from extreme weather in 2011, a new report by the Environment New York Research & Policy Center documents how global warming could lead to extreme weather becoming more common or severe in the future.

In the Path of the Storm

Weather disasters kill or injure hundreds of Americans each year and cause billions of dollars in economic damage. The risks posed by some types of weather-related disasters will likely increase in a warming world. Scientists have already detected increases in extreme precipitation events and heat waves in the United States, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently concluded that global warming will likely lead to further changes in weather extremes.

Environmental group says ‘clean cars’ would save New Yorkers millions

Environment New York, a statewide citizen-based advocacy group, said Monday a new report  — Gobbling Less Gas for Thanksgiving: How Clean Car Standards Will Cut Oil Use and Save Americans Money — shows more fuel efficient cars would cut oil use and save New Yorkers roughly $14.8 million at the gas pump this Thanksgiving alone.

Gobbling Less Gas for Thanksgiving

America’s dependence on oil threatens our environment, our economy, and our national security. Whether it is the scars left by the oil spills in the Yellowstone and Kalamazoo rivers and the Gulf of Mexico, the $1 billion that American families and businesses send overseas every day for oil, or the nearly 2 billion metric tons of global warming pollution emitted annually which fuels more and more extreme weather, these problems demand that we break our dependence on oil.

New Report: New York City and Long Island Rank in the Top Twenty Smoggiest Large Metropolitan Areas in the Country

Today Environment New York released a new report showing that both New York City and Long Island are among the top twenty smoggiest large metropolitan areas in the country.  Smog is a harmful air pollutant that leads to asthma attacks and exacerbates respiratory illnesses, especially among children and the elderly.

Danger in the Air: Unhealthy Air Days in 2010 and 2011

Though air quality has improved significantly in the last decade as a result of policies at the state and federal level, there is still much to be done, as there are millions of people living in metropolitan areas around the country exposed to multiple days each summer when the air is unhealthy to breathe. This report ranks metropolitan areas for their unhealthy air days in 2010 and 2011.
