Welcome to Environment New York

Environment New York is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. Our professional staff combines independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for New York's environment. Environment New York's staff draws on 30 years of success in tackling our state's top environmental problems.

As part of Environment America, we fight to protect our air, water and open spaces, here in New York, in state capitols across the country, and in Washington, D.C.

Building a greener future.

Restoring our oceans to health

Whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, fish and other marine wildlife stand a better chance of survival thanks to our efforts to prevent oil and gas drilling in sensitive coastal waters and prohibit cruise ship dumping. In the Atlantic, off Long Island, summer flounder, scup, porgy and sharks will be protected from the ravages of overfishing.

Repower America with wind and solar

Throughout New York and across the nation, workers are erecting wind turbines and installing solar equipment that will supply clean electricity to millions of Americans. Our staff and members have helped win new laws to require that more of our energy comes from clean, renewable sources, and now we’re urging our leaders in D.C. to expand clean energy nationwide.

Standing up for wild forests

Our staff and members helped win protections for nearly 60 million acres of pristine national forests. When President Bush rewrote these rules, we mobilized millions of Americans to counter attempts to log or drill for gas and oil in forests from Alaska to Maine, including 16,000 acres of National Forests found within New York state.

Take Action:

State officials are considering rules to allow gas drilling in the New York City watershed -- endangering the drinking water of 9 million people. Gas drilling releases toxic chemicals, methane and contaminated wastewater -- all of which can leach into our water supply and pose a huge threat to public health. Now it's your turn to weigh in. Sign our petition and make your voice heard now. Tell our state officials: no drilling near our drinking water!
